12 NEW DOG HOUSES
Hello
One of this fall projects that has to be finished before the snow comes, is DOG HOUSES.
We Purchased plywood to make 12 new dog houses.

We use ½ inch plywood for the walls and floor and 5/8 plywood for the roof.
The house size is : 2ft high X 32inch wide X 23 inch deep.
The roof is overhanging 1 inch in the front.
Then I paInt them with Deck/fence water based Paint from Behr, which is pricy but very good quality and last long.
Of course they are RED!!!!
I do 2 coats of paint and then for the fun I do some Stencils in the front!

PILLING UP DOG FOOD
We order 4 tons of dog food for this fall, so here's what so far 2 tons of Energy 4800 look like:

We use over one ton of dog food per month... so this will not last too long. This dog food is so good that we don't feed meat at all.

TRAIL WORK
Couple days ago we went to work on some rough part of our winter trail. The temperature are so warm nothing is frozen, so we decided to go cut some TUSSEK.
So if there is not much snow we will be able to go on the swamps. Last year with our handlers we went when it was frozen and it was so hard to cut them with the axe, so this year we tried with the Bursh Cutter (Metal blade) and it worked fine, it is faster and hurt the back less.
Jacques took the Chainsaw and cut the stumps sticking out lower and I cut the Tussek with the mental support of Keops of course !!

PAINTING JOBS
Well I got some painting jobs done before the winter. But I am not done yet.
Couple weeks ago I redid all the painting on the outside of our Dog Van. Repainted the door flaps in white and the Back doors and Storage doors in "Aluminium" paint. The truck look like almost new!!

SHREK UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
Shrek

Shrek is a male of about 57/60 pounds who turn 4 years old this summer.
He is very noticeable he has that weird look on his face with those big blue eyes that are a little “crossed”. Physically he also has a “short” back compare to his brother Alf and Scooby.
The whole litter was named after non-real character, I hope you all the the Shrek, the Green Ogre.... his brother is Alf (Fuzzy Alien who like to eat cats) and Scooby (The world famous Scooby Doo), we had a female named Fiona (Shrek wife) that we sold couple years ago.
He is very funny, he is pretty quiet doesn’t bark much but he is a clown and act goofy to get your attention.
He is an official member of the "Baboon family" which means he is out of BONZAI which was our Original Baboon…. Why Baboon, well find a documentary on Baboon and this will describe well their personality!!! He loves to come "pee" on your leg when you are hooking up other dog!
The funny thing is that every female in the kennel is in LOVE with Shrek, turn them loose and they go to him and play with him. His best friend is Egypt, when they play they look so funny because he is twice her size. Shrek and Egypt run together also in the team and it is like the Elephant and the "flea"....
He is part of the main team and goes to every major race with Jacques and Finished Iditarod last year. He doesn’t have the best appetite and body disposition this is why he didn’t get the chance this summer like his brother to make “puppies”.
He is a good honest dog and we like him a lot.

Shrek and his co worker Egypt
PS: Coming up Under the SPOTLIGHT: Egypt, Alf, Oracle....

Smelling like winter
Life goes on here and we are training everyday about 48 dogs. Now we go with each team 12 miles one day and 6.5 miles the other day. Pretty soon we will go 12 miles two days in a row.
Today we had rain mix with snow for training and 10mph wind... cold... HUMID!
sure smell like winter is around the corner. I want the temperature to drop so the ground freeze and I can put straw in the dog houses, right now it is just oo muddy and the dogs will get it all wet if I was to put straw now...
I'll take photos of the training run tomorow...

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
MYLENE
This is a very hard one to write... I started to write it 3 days ago and was suppose to post it yesterday but Life and sad things happen since.
We lost Mylene to Liver Cancer yesterday (we didn't know she was sick).
So I re-write the text and change present to past.
Mylene was one of our main and best leaders. She is Memphis Daughter and like her, very strong personality and extremely lovable. She got her name from the French singer "Mylene Farmer" that both of us like so much.
She is a character always happy barking and running like a maniac. She was also a very good mom. She is one of the best Jacques trained for command and we rely on her and the trust we have in her a lot in the race. She loved going to price giving ceremony and LOVED kids and been the center of attention. She was supposing to race all this winter with Jacques as the main leader.
The day before yesterday she ran 12 miles with her mom in Lead perfect, happy like always.... but in the evening she didn't eat her diner so we brought her inside the house where she spend the night by the wood stove, she didn't look right and seem swollen we decided that first thing in the morning she would go to the vet, we were thinking of the beginning of Occlusion or something similar. We were so wrong.
I was at the vet clinic in town a 8am, nothing on the X-Ray so we decide to open her up well me and the Vet (Dr Stuve) were "hoping" for a broken spleen to be removed but we found a CANCER so huge unbelievable her liver was no more it was just a HUGE TUMOR.... the tumor had somewhat "explode" and she was bleeding to death from that the vet removed). Our vet never so a tumor so big and having the dog in perfect shape until the night before! He told me the toughness of that Alaskan Husky is so hard when they are sick because they don’t show any signs until it is almost too late.
Hard decision but the best one for her I decided to have her put to sleep. She was only 5 years old

MAMBO UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
Mambo
Male, red and white was about 52 pounds ; Born August 1986 died in 1996 (cancer).

Mambo even though he is no longer with us is still very important for us. He is the foundation of our kennel bloodline.
Jacques purchased him when he was a Yearling. He was produced by Joee Redington Jr. He was a husky looking dog, brown eyes, ears up, who loved to run.
He was working so hard that after each training he would barely walk and we never had thought he would hold up to all those races, but he did because he was so tough.
He raced among others : Alpirod 91, 92, 93, 94 - Gold Run 94 (Leader) - North Pole 94 (Leader) - LNAC 94 (leader) - Tok 94 (leader)
He was a nice leader not so good on command due to the fact he was completely crazy once in harness. He would jump 3ft high on the line he was easy to spot on the team at the starting line.
We had 22 pups total from him and today we have in the kennel we have 2 dogs directly out of him (Snicker and Crow both 11 years old ) and 20 alive grand kids here in our kennel and great grand father of 73 dogs here; 3 of the 13 main leaders in our kennel are his grand kids and 6 are his great grand kids.
Today we bred our dogs to have a strong Mambo presence we really liked his attitude, toughness.
So even though he is dead I figure he needs to be under the SPOTLIGHT!!

JEWEL UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
JEWEL
Color: Red/Brown
Female born April 14th 1999
Jewel one of our main race leaders. She doesn’t look much , small husky type female with lot of fur and funny ears but she is a GREAT DOG, she is also very spoiled and wags her tail a lot.
She and her sister are a result of an “accidental breeding” Jacques was Caribou hunting when they were born and when I realized that Poupette was going to have puppies and then saw only 2 puppies .I said to myself “well it is only 2 more”, I did try to give those two pups (unwanted at the time) to friends and they all said no due to the close “bloodline breeding” it was…
Poupette the mom was 1/2 sister to the Dad Ding-Dong (both out of Mambo).
I am so happy they all refused those two are GREAT SUPER LEADERS….
I like Jewel more than her sister Jenny because she is more like Memphis “DARE DEVIL” you want say, don’t care, not stressed out by everything and STUBBRUN big time…
Like Memphis Jewel has a mind of her own but she finished both Kobuk 440 and Iditarod in Single lead…

Jacques with Jewel in Nome last March

MEMPHIS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
Hello,
I am going to try to put "under the spotlight" one day per day or may be every other day.... Just so you get to know them a little more beside their racing blood. So of course I'll start with MEMPHIS!!!
Name: Memphis (Female)
Color: Grey and White
Born: April 8th 1999.
Memphis is my favorite dog, I love all my dogs but this one is very special to me. Her nickname is “dinguette” (in reference to her dad)
First she is a daughter of my beloved leader Ding Dong which teach me so much. She has a very strong personality and she is very funny. She will do things to get your attention you would not believe!!!
She is an excellent leader. She is a little stubborn which sometimes cause problems on the trails but she has such a drive….
Put her in Lead and she make all team go faster. We call her the “minute” dog because one year in Wyoming Jacques needed to make some minute to secure is placing, he put her in lead and he won the Stage… Same thing last year on Iditarod when she was in lead Jacques was going has fast as our friend Doug Swingley. But to go down the Alaska Range he removed from lead !!! to make sure to be in one piece at the bottom of the Mountain.
She races in Sprint race Limited Class and also Fur Rondy (3 days in lead) and ONAC, Stage races and last year finished the Iditarod. Iditarod isn’t her cup of tea but she finished very well.
She is the mother of 17 dogs in the kennel and she has 11 grand kids in the kennel also.
She hates traveling in airplanes, she is the one that chewed up a all air kennel on our way back from Russia and got chased by the police at the Anchorage Airport and it took us 5 hours to find her….
She is a beautiful and special dog.
To check her bloodline on our Web Kennel System click here

Trail work
Today we got the opportunity to get a small dozer in a part of our trail that was "tricky" and we called it "the gouille", to complicated to explain if you don't speak french so just let say it was down hill, not even ground, twisty in middle of many trees...
Well it is now almost straight and flat... So the "Gouille" is no longer a "Gouille" !
As soon has it freezes we will start going on the winter trail and clearing all the trees that may have fall this summer or anything on the trail.
